DALeast x RexRomae

Exhibition

RexRomae Gallery

London, United Kingdom

Supported by SAN Projects, DALeast opened his first UK solo show “The London Dare – The Finale Night” in London which was curated by Rom Levy.

After tearing through the streets of London with 7 walls and hosting a web-competition for Londoners, the Chinese artist presented a unique and unforgettable body of work.

Chinese-born DALeast is easily one of the most prolific street artists of our time, as well as an accomplished painter, sculptor, and digital artist.

The dark imagery found in DALeast's art is undeniably captivating, woven with intricate detail while focusing on the simple subjects in his pieces. Each of his pieces of art is created using paint to look like thousands of metal shards are coming together to form beautiful shapes, often animals or humans. Within every piece of DALeast’s art, a pop of color observed in the background brings his subject to life. This allows him to focus on the intricacy of his technique while delivering his final product. The use of fractured imagery and contrasting backgrounds serve to give his art a breath of energy and soul that can sometimes be lost in art with a more somber subject matter.

In a period of social and political volatility, images like science fiction tales, unfold themselves into the public walls. Over the past decade, Martin Watson, understanding the urge for social engagement, puts himself in the spot of the narrator, as he creates images filled with colors and movement that playfully re-appropriate the urban elements. Images that challenge the viewers and even the socially perpetual outsiders, to reveal themselves under a different light that the one, under which they are usually seen, capturing their interaction with their environments, in the most colorful way.

Watson, who became widely known through his idiosyncratic calligraphic scribbles, filled with cultural references and subversive themes, returns with a new series of eye-grabbing imagery. Works that are socially involved in nature, delivering his commentary in a style that deliberately evokes a continuous dialogue on the decontextualisation of urban sphere.

Free, is a solo show dedicated to this very same narrative. Dedicated to the ten years of Watson’s work and artistic evolution. New and old works, brand new images but even familiar ones with a twist, will be carefully selected and presented in Hong Kong, in total agreement with the given environment and its current happenings, seeking for the source of inspiration even in today’s sociopolitical decay.

”Free” Solo Exhibition opened last December 3, 2020 at RexRomae Gallery, DIFC, Dubai, UAE.

URBANBREAK 2022

GANGNAM GU, SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

Rom Levy, director of StreetArtNews, co-planned the Special Exhibition of International Street Artists. Entitled Street Chronicles, the exhibition is showcasing the works of artists who were the pillars of street art techniques, concepts and different styles.

Street art was considered vandalism when protesters during wars and political corruptions used the walls of their cities to comment on political and social issues with slogans and graffitis. What was initially regarded as vandalism has since become a significant art form. Murals and other forms of street art are renowned for their beautification of cities, raising awareness, and standing as witnesses to history.

This proposal includes Banksy, whose identity remains anonymous to the day. His politically charged works provoke alternative viewpoints, encouraging revolution in the art world, making him one of the most controversial street artists. Banksy’s work has been breaking down the boundaries and expectations of street art critics, using many different street art mediums and styles. Banksy began his graffiti practice inspired by Blek Le Rat, one of the most prominent artists in Street Art. Inspired by what he saw in New York during his visit in 1971, Blek Le Rat started creating artworks across the streets of Paris in 1981. He primarily used stencils in his practice. His first stencils were black rats running along the walls throughout Paris. In 1983 he began to paint life-sized stencils, which became his trademark alongside his rats and have influenced generations of street artists worldwide.

Street Chronicles exhibited works of Roby Dwi Antono, Banksy, DALeast, D*Face, Shepard Fairey, Andrew Hem, Invader, Kai, Leon Keer, Suanjaya Kencut, Lonac, PichiAvo, Roa, Ryol, Ruben Sanchez, Okuda San Miguel, Andre Saraiva, Andrew Schoultz, Hua Tunan, and Martin Whatson.

SAN PROJECTS, a highly regarded production company, has partnered with Stems Gallery to produce an awe-inspiring art installation in Dubai. Featuring the works of renowned French multidisciplinary artist, Julien Boudet, the installation includes two thought-provoking sculptures, "Explosion, 2023" and "Pressure, 2023", which challenge visitors' perceptions of reality.

Inspired by Boudet's passion for car culture in Dubai, the two sculptures pay tribute to the iconic Mercedes G Wagon, the city's most popular car. Drawing on Boudet's passion for basketball and the iconic AMG logo, the sculptures explore the concepts of accumulation and compression, creating a giant counterfeit AMG basketball and playing with logos and bootleg culture, which is prevalent in Dubai.

The sculptures were produced locally in Dubai, adding an authentic touch to the artwork. They are in conversation with each other, creating a unique blend of art and culture. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase my sculptures in Dubai, a city that has inspired me for years," said Boudet.
