Unexpected Festival - Fort Smith

City Of Fort Smith

Fort Smith, Arkansas

United States

Over the past few years, street art festivals have become more popular in major cities around the world where there is already some evidence and acknowledgement of the culture. Occasionally, organizers in smaller communities are able to convince others of the benefits (both economic and communal) of adding public art to their walls, and great events like The Unexpected Street Art Project in Fort Smith, Arkansas are born.

Organized by 64.6 Downtown and curated by JUSTKIDS, The Unexpected Street Art Project kicked off on September 3 with a gallery exhibition titled Printology at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith’s Windgate Art and Design Building. Over the course of the next week, residents watched as historic buildings in downtown Fort Smith were transformed by a class of students from the University and a squad of artists from around the world: D*Face (London), Ana Maria (Puerto Rico), Bicicleta Sem Freio (Brazil), VHILS (Portugal), Maser (Ireland), ASKEW ONE (New Zealand), and ROA(Belgium).

Life Is Beautiful -
Las Vegas

City Of Las Vegas

Downtown Vegas, Nevada

Walls across an area of Old Las Vegas were covered in murals and installations by over 15 artists ahead of the third annual Life is Beautiful music and art fest. Curated by JUSTKIDS, the works included pieces by several artists seen lately here on Colossal including Bordalo II, Bikismo, Ana Maria, D*FACE, Pixel Pancho, Filthy Luker, 1010, and Ruben Sanchez. Even Banksy’s famous All City waterfall truck made an appearance.

The Life is Beautiful festival is just one part of the ambitious Downtown Project, an endeavor backed heavily by Zappo’s Tony Hsieh as a means of fostering entrepenurship, creativity, art, and innovation in the Old Vegas area. Long after the festival’s stages and speakers are packed away, the 30+ cumulative murals over the last three years have made the area an easily walkable destination for lots of great street art—a welcome distraction for many from the overwhelming attractions nearby.

In addition to murals the event also included an entire abandoned motel transformed into an ‘Art Motel’ by APEX, talks from the likes of Bill Nye and Rosario Dawson, and plenty of food provided by a swarm of local chefs.

“An Ode to Emirati Achievements in the Vast Expanse of Space”

At SAN Projects, we believe in the power of art to transcend boundaries, be they terrestrial or celestial. We’re excited to introduce our latest artistic venture, a magnificent mural nestled in the heart of Al Ain.

“A Tapestry of History and Future”

This mural is a celebration of two pivotal figures who embody the spirit of the UAE: the space-bound Sultan AlNeyadi and the ever-present guiding light, Sheikh Zayed, the nation's esteemed founding father. Together, they chronicle the UAE’s incredible journey from its bedouin roots to its star-reaching ambitions.

Mural Highlights:

1. Stellar Achievement: Dominating the canvas, Sultan AlNeyadi stands as a beacon of the nation's foray into the unknown, being among the first Emirati astronauts and leaving his mark with historic feats.

2. Guiding Constellation: The backdrop shimmers with the constellation-styled visage of Sheikh Zayed, emphasizing the timeless guidance and vision of the father of the nation.

3. A Journey Beyond Stars: Sultan AlNeyadi is immortalized for his remarkable roles - the inaugural Emirati aboard the International Space Station for a half-year mission and the first Arab astronaut to venture into the spacewalk.

A Message from SAN Projects

"This mural transcends time, echoing the achievements of yesterday and the possibilities of tomorrow. Through it, we aim to bridge the gap between the UAE's golden history and its boundless aspirations."
