PM9 - Berlin

Berlin, Germany

The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love colour the most,” John Ruskin famously proclaimed in the 19th century. Our attraction to colour is innate and influences us every day, in a myriad of contexts. In our technology-centric world today, the possibilities of colour are great than ever.

At a special exhibition at Urban Nation, Berlin, curated by SAN Projects , the arcane effects of colours in the contemporary urban environment are explored through the work of 10 internationally renowned artists.

Whether in large-scale murals in urban environments around the world, or on smaller scale pieces on paper and canvas, the ten featured artists—hailing from around the globe—converge to investigate the specific way a high-octane acolour palette can produce an intense visual experience. In some of the works—shown for the first time in Berlin—this emerges from the interactions between colours and their tensions and contrasts; while other works inquire into the expressive qualities of colours in the context of visual culture today.

From figurative forms to more abstract treatments, each artist offers their own interpretation of bright colours. For artists including Askew, Tristan Eaton, Bicicleta Sem Freio, as well as Okuda San Miguel and Fafi, the figurative portrait is reimagined as a psychotropic mix of patterns and 80s comic-book hues, where lines are deconstructed and progressively dissolved by a spectrum of the most vivid colour and abstract forms.

URBAN NATION MUSEUM -BERLIN

Berlin, Germany

The vision of a global art community, a network without limits, became reality on September 16 2017 when Urban Nation Museum For Contemporary Art opened its doors.

SAN Projects curated a large section of the opening exhibition with its international roster of artists.

This project is unique new museum and archive for research, exhibitions and exchange, focusing on one of the most important art forms, and the most documented art movements in the 21st century opened its doors to the public.

Urban Nation was built as the first independent and non-commercial space for urban contemporary art. With more than 100 artists, Urban Nation Berlin made the impossible possible, and with the support of Berlin’s secretary of cultural affairs, Tim Renner, this initiative was congratulated because of its vision and ambition.

The unique institution houses all nations under one roof and its located at Bülowstrasse 7 in Schöneberg, Berlin. For the inaugural day, Rom Levy from SAN Projects and a panel of other curators have selected approximately 100 urban artists, including Seth Globetrotter, Jaz, Invader, Shepard Fairey, Banksy, Faith47, Icy and Sot, Herakut, Nychos, RETNA, Saner, just to mention a few. Their pieces also were created specifically for the museum and exhibited for the very first time.
